On some days you will be asked to think-write about a chemistry-related issue. On some days, you will be asked to
solve a warm-up problem alone or with your seating partners. You will commonly have opportunities to share your
ideas in whole class or small group discussions. I expect each entry to begin with the date and a brief re-statement
of the issue, topic or question. I expect that you will write about 1/3 page a day.

When I grade preambles, I look for completion of each think-write and warm-up problem. I do not grade grammar
or spelling, but make your ideas easily understood. Skip lines between items and leave the margins empty. I
appreciate the use of pens and dark pencils and reasonable legibility. Highlight your preamble titles for visibility.

Since we will discuss think-write topics in class and work on warm-up problems in small groups, it is expected that
you will include good ideas that other students share in your own entries. Nevertheless, the individual nature of
your thinking should be manifest in all preamble entries.

The following are descriptions of the minimum criteria for each grade.

Noble Laureate (100%)
All think-write responses and warm-up problems are completed on time as evidenced by regular participation in
class discussions and a complete, organized preamble log.

Research Scientist (95%)
At least 95% of think write responses and warm-up problem solution are completed on time as evidenced by
regular participation in class discussions and a 95% complete, organized preamble log.

Lab Technician (85%)
At least 85% of think write responses and warm-up problem solution are completed on time as evidenced by
participation in class discussions and an 85% complete, organized preamble log.

Graduate Student (75%)
At least 75% of think write responses and warm-up problem solution are completed on time as evidenced by
participation in class discussions and a 75% complete, organized preamble log.

Upgrade (75%)
Student may write a science article review reports to improve the preamble grade. Each satisfactory report equals 3
days preambles.

Late (75%)
Preambles packet turned in late and it meets Lab Technician criteria.

Trainee (40%)
Preambles packet turned in but it does not meet Grad student criteria.

No Credit
There are three ways to receive no credit. (1) Do not do any preambles and do not participate in class
discussions. (2) Do not turn in your preamble packet or turn it in too late.
